About the Institute

Lectures on art history at the University of Warsaw were initiated in 1917 by Professor Zygmunt Batowski. The Chair, and later the Institute of Art History, has been located since its inception within the university’s main campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście Street – its seat being the so-called Porektorski Building, erected in 1816 by Jakub Kubicki and rebuilt in 1861 by Antoni Sulimowski. Until August 31, 2020, the Institute was part of the Faculty of History, and since September 1 of that year it has been part of the Faculty of Culture and Arts.
